Actor to star in 'Growing Up'; joins 'Killer Rebound Guy'
Taran Killam has been tapped to star in a pair of new indie pics during his summer hiatus from "Saturday Night Live."
Killam will topline "Growing Up (and Other Lies)" from "Humboldt County" helmers Danny Jacobs and Darren Grodsky; and he'll join "Happy Endings" star Adam Pally in "Killer Rebound Guy," which marks the feature directorial debut of Funny or Die filmmakers Matt Villines and Osmany Rodriguez.
A comedy of male arrested development, "Growing Up" follows four friends who unite to walk the length of Manhattan in an ode to the good old days as one of them plans to leave the city.
Killam will play an artist who decides to move home and take over the family business, while indie stalwart Amber Tamblyn will play his newly single ex-girlfriend who complicates his plans. Jacobs and Grodsky wrote the script and will direct the pic, which is in the process of securing the last of its financing.
As for "Killer Rebound Guy," Barry Josephson ("Enchanted") and Alexander Young ("Life as We Know It") are producing for Josephson Entertainment. Written by John Reynolds and Katie Dippold, chilling romantic comedy finds Pally playing a bartender who tries to convince everyone in his small town that his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend (Killam) is actually a serial killer.
Production is tentatively skedded to start this summer after Killam wraps "Growing Up," but before he segues to a key supporting role in Steve McQueen's "Twelve Years a Slave," which stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt.
Villines and Rodriguez have directed and edited dozens of comedy shorts for Funny or Die, including "24/7 Blake Griffin: Intern" and "Disney Princess Ke$ha." Duo are repped by 3 Arts Entertainment and attorney Lev Ginsburg.
Killam is no stranger to Funny or Die, having starred in its short "Three Matthew McConaugheys and a Baby." Thesp is poised to carry a larger workload on "Saturday Night Live," which is losing Kristen Wiig next season, and likely Andy Samberg too.
Killam is repped by CAA, Principato-Young Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.
